“Every time that you approach the altar, you have the good fortune to assist in God’s great loving gesture as he continues to want to give himself to each one of us, to be close to us, to help us, to give us strength to live in the right way.” – Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI
The altar server is privileged to experience the liturgy by assisting the priest, deacon, and other ministers at Mass. At Holy Spirit, the ministry of altar server is extended to anyone who has reached the age of nine. Altar servers carry the cross, the processional candles, the incense and thurible, hold the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, wash the hands of the priest, and assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary.
Some training is required to be an altar server at Holy Spirit. It also requires commitment and devotion to the service of Christ in the liturgy – having regularly scheduled altar servers available is a great blessing to the altar server as well as the rest of the parish.
