How can you say … let me remove that splinter in your eye
when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.

Luke 6:39-45
Sometimes it is hard to image that Jesus had a sense of humor, and I guess that is because the four Evangelists took his teaching so seriously. For me it is impossible to imagine that Jesus did not laugh often and tease others into laughing as well. The best humor is often personal and those of us who can laugh at ourselves are on the way to humility. Next Sunday’s gospel passage gives us a peek into the humor of Jesus. With a little exaggeration for the sake of humor, Jesus gently nudges us toward the admission of how impudent we are to try and judge and condemn the behavior of others when we probably ought to keep our mouths shut! If we are honest with ourselves, which is surely the purpose of Jesus being so humorous, we can laugh at and ridicule our pomposity and thereby deprive it of its power to rule our lives. We might also begin to look for the Messiah who might be sitting beside us, or perhaps just waiting to emerge from within us. As our Holy Father said so simply: “Who am I to judge?”
